Communities In Schools President Dan Cardinali issued the following statement following the release of new figures from the U.S. Department of Education on the national high school graduation rate.
“The new 82% high school graduation rate demonstrates we’re on the right track to making sure that every student in America stays in school, graduates and goes on to a brighter future. It’s a great accomplishment. But when poor children and minority children are dropping out of school at much higher rates, there is simply no way we deserve a passing grade.
The recent passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act represents a new opportunity to help low-income and underserved students, who are now the majority in public schools, overcome the achievement gap once and for all. It will require leadership from our state and local leaders who will have more control over everything from testing and teacher evaluations to investing in programs proven to help at-risk students. And yes, it will also require continued leadership in Washington from our Congress and the next President.
We look forward to partnering with those leaders and with school leaders across the country to ensure all our children reach their fullest potential.”
