We at CIS of Nevada are so thankful and thrilled that Olympic gold medal swimmer, Misty Hyman, was able to visit four of our schools and share her inspirational journey with over 700 students!
Thanks to the Wynn Las Vegas, who sponsored Misty’s trip, we were able to bring her to Chaparral High School, Rancho High School, Petersen Elementary and Bailey Middle School. We also partnered with Wet ‘N Wild Las Vegas and Springs Preserve, who donated hundreds of water bottles, sunglasses and lip balm and other gifts for the students who attended.
Misty rose to prominence in the swimming world at a young age in the 1990s. After barely losing out on the qualifying trials for the 1996 Olympics, she rededicated herself and took the gold medal in the 2000 women’s 200-meter butterfly, an upset victory no one saw coming. All of which is even more amazing, considering Misty was diagnosed with asthma at the age of five.
Her frank and down-to-earth depiction of her journey, her humor and her bright personality shone through, as she invited students onstage to share their “gold medal moments” — after which she would place her Olympic gold medal around their neck!
This was truly a remarkable and one-of-a-kind experience for our students, Site Coordinators and everyone at Communities In Schools of Nevada. All we can say is “THANK YOU!” to Misty and the Wynn.
