CIS of Nevada Reports Record Graduation Rate Amidst Historic Growth

2022 to 2023 School Year Results for CIS of Nevada

(Jan. 30, 2024) – Communities In Schools of Nevada (CIS), part of the nation’s leading evidence-based stay-in-school organization serving schools in the Clark, Elko, Humboldt and Washoe County school districts, announces its outcomes for its case-managed students in the 2022-2023 school year. CIS served more than 90,000 students, the single largest year of growth in the organization’s history and achieved a 95% graduation rate, a one percentage point increase from the prior school year.

“We are incredibly proud of the Class of 2023 for achieving a 95% graduation rate, which sets a new record for our organization since our inception,” said Tami Hance-Lehr, CEO and state director, Communities In Schools of Nevada. “Each year, our graduation rate reinforces the efficacy and proven value of our evidence-based model of Integrated Student Supports, more commonly known as wraparound services.  Overall, our data speaks volumes about the remarkable impact we make when we surround our children with support that is custom-built for their unique needs and provided by our site coordinators and nonprofit partners.”

CIS’ graduation rate increased from 92% in 2020-2021, to 94% in 2021-2022, and now 95% for the 2022-2023 school year. All data is authenticated through a rigorous verification process performed by the Communities In Schools National Office.

A summary of the data report for the 2022-2023 school year is as follows:

  • CIS’ 95% graduation rate is based on 504 high school seniors and 6 juniors who graduated from 17 Title I or high-needs public schools across the state who are case-managed by CIS staff. This year CIS served 57 more graduation-eligible students than the previous year. This marks CIS’ highest graduation rate since its inception in 2004.
  • By comparison, the 4-year graduation rate of high schools that CIS has been present in for at least 1 full year is 86%, 5 full percentage points ahead of the State, demonstrating the impact of its schoolwide support in addition to case management.
  • CIS served 92 schools, which is 14 more schools than the previous year. This marks the organization’s single largest year of growth since its inception.
  • CIS served 91,125 students, nearly 14,000 more students than the previous year.
  • CIS case-managed 5,957 students, nearly 1,200 more students than the previous year.
  •  CIS’ 139 site coordinators dedicated nearly 133,000 hours to their students, with 85% of the time spent case-managing students.
  • CIS’ caseload is comprised of 38.5% Hispanic/Latinx students, 25% Black/African American students, 20% Multi-Racial students, 13% White students, 1.5% Native American/Alaska Native, 1% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, .6% Asian, and .4% Other.
  • Across the state, CIS distributed $3,738,351 worth of basic need supplies, consisting of more than $1 million worth of clothing and nearly $1 million worth of hygiene products to students.

Most of CIS’ case-managed students who have graduated or advanced to the next grade level are from high-need, Title I schools, where a significant percentage of the student population lives in poverty. On a national scale, the child poverty rates have more than doubled in 2022, according to this report by The Annie E. Casey Foundation.

“Students’ futures should be determined by their effort – not by their background, abilities or zip code. Nevada’s low-income students and families continue to be the hardest hit by the aftershocks of the pandemic. Last school year, more students and families throughout Nevada faced food insecurity, unemployment and homelessness,” said Hance-Lehr. “Now, more than ever, we are calling on our community, our nonprofit partners and government leaders to join us in doing whatever it takes to remove roadblocks that keep students from succeeding.”
